Who we are

KnowYourNeuro.org (referred to herein as "KYN", "we", "us", and "our"), a free educational website, respects the privacy of individuals ("you", "your", and "users") who use our website, products and services, and is committed to protecting it through adherence to this privacy statement.  The Policy applies to KnowYourNeuro.org and KYN-operated microsites (collectively the “Websites”), and describes the personal information that KYN collects from the Websites and the ways in which KYN uses the information.  By using the Websites or communicating with KYN through online/offline channels, you are deemed to have assented and agreed to the Policy as in effect at the time of your use.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. All images used on the Websites are for illustrative purposes only.  Any person depicted in the content/Websites is a model.  The depiction does not suggest that the model's endorsement of any business, product, service, cause, association, or endeavor of KYN is expressed or implied, and that such person has or had a problem with high-risk behavior or any association with substance use, mental health or behavioral health problems.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Links to External Sites

The content on our Websites may include links to external websites that are not directly operated and maintained by KYN.  These external sites have their own privacy policies and/or data collection practices, which may be substantially different from KYN's, concerning personal information.  KYN encourages you to review and learn about the privacy policies and practices of all external websites and services.  We take no responsibility for linked external sites.

Information Collected

You can browse the content on the Websites without revealing any personal information. From time to time, KYN may provide the opportunity to participate in a survey on the Websites, requesting or allowing you to submit content that may be uploaded to the Websites.  In conducting a survey, we may ask you for certain information such as your age, gender, race, ethnicity, and your opinion about our services.  Participation will be voluntary and, if indicated as anonymous, it will not be linked to any personal information.

For certain online transactions with KYN including making donations to, purchasing items or services from, or participating in auctions or events sponsored by or for the benefit of KYN, you will be provided with a link to an SSL-secured website, which may be a third party’s website, to process your requests. The types of personal information that would be collected are disclosed prior to or at the time of transaction.  Please read privacy policies and data collection practices of any third-party site that processes online transactions on behalf of KYN.  We take no responsibility for the security and/or data collection practices of third parties.

Video Contest

KnowYourNeuro uses the Site to provide a means for students to submit entries to a student video contest. In order to submit a video for consideration, students must provide certain personal information, including name, grade, school name and address, email and phone number. This personal information is only used by KnowYourNeuro staff to verify student eligibility for the contest and to communicate with students during the contest period from submission through the judging process. If a student’s video is selected as a finalist, the student must provide additional personal information, including date of birth, home address, and the name and email of a parent or guardian. A photo will be requested but is not required. This personal information is only used by KnowYourNeuro staff to confirm student eligibility for being selected as a winner and to communicate with students during the finalist and winner announcement period.

KnowYourNeuro collects and processes your personal information only with your consent or, for those students below the age at which they can provide consent under applicable laws, the consent or authorization of your parent or guardian. Individuals can always refuse to supply personal information, can withdraw their previously-given consent to process such information, and can request access to, or correction or removal of, their personal data, with the caveat that doing so may prevent them from engaging in certain website-related activities for which their personal information is necessary (such as participating in the video contest). By using and submitting information through the Site, you consent to Population Education’s processing of your personal data in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy.

Cookies

To enhance your experience with the Websites, non-personal information may be collected through the use of "cookies."  These cookies are files commonly placed in your computer's web browser to store your preferences while using the Websites.  If you don’t want information collected through the use of cookies, you may delete, disable, turn off, or reject the cookies by changing your web browser settings.  However, disabling cookies might also disable some features of the Websites in which content can function only in conjunction with the cookies.

Who we share your data with

KYN does not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to other organizations or individuals in ways different from what is disclosed in the Policy.  KYN is the sole owner of the information collected through its services and the Websites, and may use the information to assess KYN's programs and for development efforts.  On occasion, we may share the information with third-party companies for the sole purpose of assisting KYN in fulfilling such assessments and development efforts.

To respond to your requests and for updates about new content on the Websites and special events organized by KYN, your email address in KYN's database will be used to communicate.  KYN may also directly communicate with you via phone and/or direct mail concerning non-anonymous surveys, submission of content, or services we provide.  Information collected from the communication will be stored as long as KYN deems reasonably necessary and practicable for the purpose of enhancing our services, or to otherwise meet legal requirements.

Your personal information will only be accessible to authorized KYN staff, consultants, agents, subcontractors and professional advisors, all of whom are contractually bound to honor the terms of this Privacy Policy.  You acknowledge, consent, and agree that to the extent legally permissible in each applicable jurisdiction, KYN may access, preserve, and/or disclose the information collected (including personal information) to a law enforcement agency or another third party if required to do so by law or if KYN determines that access, preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to: (a) comply with legal process; (b) respond to claims that any content that you submit violates the rights of third parties; or (c) protect the safety, rights, or property of KYN's visitors (including you) or others.

What rights you have over your data

You have the right to access, update, request removal of, and correct factual inaccuracies in personally identifiable information that is collected through the Websites, subject to the provisions in the preceding section. If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

From time to time, KYN may decide, or be required by law to make changes to this Privacy Policy.  If KYN makes any material changes to the Policy that may impact how we use personal information, we will post the revised version to this webpage and notify you via regular communication channels.  You are encouraged to read KYN's e-newsletters or to return to this page periodically for any update.
